Passing of longtime TVFF Member Hal Wilson

September 11, 2024 9:08 AM | Rob Farris (Administrator)

Unfortunately, we lost a long timed member of Tri-Valley Fly Fishers this past Thursday with the passing of Hal Wilson.  If you look back into our history you’ll see many mentions and Hal’s contributions including his various roles and notable inclusion on our “Singing Reel” plaque.

I contacted his son Mike, and he had this to offer about his Dad...

“I recall a TVFF outing to Camp Far West where the winning large catch came as a club member let his fly drift while pausing to light a cigarette...Dad and I along with everybody else were diligently employing every bass catching strategy in our repertoire to no avail. The Dad lesson: sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

A 'snapshot' thought: TVFF had an outing to Emma Lake, Dad enjoyed that so much he then brought my two brothers, his two grandsons, myself and a good friend of mine. For the next few years that was a traditional summer outing we all looked forward to. Upon Dad's passing that was the first memory my friend shared; those Emma Lake trips that had their start with that TVFF outing. That helps define Dad, his great love of the outdoors and especially fishing that came with an enthusiastic welcome for others to enjoy it too.

I don't think there are plans for much of an obituary, Dad didn't want any big deal made about his passing. Although I believe his rich and treasured legacy is that big deal.

Thank you, Mike”.

Hal Wilson was one of the founding fathers of TVFF known initially as the Livermore Fly Fishermen. Hal was a pillar of our club for over 50 years. He served on the Board of Directors from 1965 to nearly 2018 in most every role including President. While I served with Hal, he often played “Devil’s Advocate” as we discussed various projects. I always appreciated his comments and often found them invaluable in avoiding problems or unintended consequences. He loved fishing and preferred using nymphs or wet-flies on flat waters. He was a bit of a purist and would not consider indicator (bobber) fishing.

Hal was the first to welcome me when I joined the club, making my entrance into TVFF easy and enjoyable. He was the first club member I fished with and almost the last. I learned something valuable every time we fished together. Hal was a great friend and I am very sad to learn of his passing.
