Stillwater Class - Fishing Lakes for Trout

As we've seen over several high-water years, when rivers are unfishable it's always good to have a backup plan. This two-part course is designed for those wishing to improve their stillwater fishing skills. We'll be using Phil Rowley's excellent book as a guide, and the course will cover specific tactical skills used in our lakes.

The course includes the following beginner to intermediate topics:

  • Why fish lakes?
  • Equipment including rods, reels, types of fly lines for most effective uses
  • Watercraft alternatives and tradeoffs (tube vs pontoon vs pram)
  • Use of anchors and anchoring situations
  • Leaders, knots and tippet for most effective use
  • Use and types of indicators for shallow and deep water
  • How lakes work; thermoclines and depth zones
  • How to fish weather and lunar changes
  • Understanding and finding structure
  • Getting a "grab", and keeping it
  • Types of retrieves and when to use
  • Lake fishing entomology
