Interest Only - Roostercomb Ranch - Bass Pond Fishing

Event Skill Levels:

  • Pond:  9 bass ponds, beginner to intermediate with float tubes or  prams.
  • Hiking: Beginner to intermediate into Henry Coe Park lakes
  • Catch success rate: beginner to intermediate skills required

This sprawling private ranch is located adjacent to Henry Coe State Park, off Hwy 152 entrance in Hollister near Casa de Fruta Restaurant. It’s a 22-mile off-road trek through the backcountry from the park entrance. This requires a 3-day commitment. Accommodations are a 1928 ranch house and bunk house with options to tent camp or sleep in your vehicle. The ranch offers 9 bass ponds on its property plus 2 hike-ins lakes on Henry Coe Park property, float tube or shore fishing, hiking, birding, photography, and opportunities for riding your ATV on miles of ranch roads. This is a warm water fishery for Bass & Bluegills.

The terrain is rough, rocky and sometimes steep, therefore, all vehicles MUST be 4-WD with good clearance to drive in and around the ranch! If you do not have a 4-WD vehicle, arrangements can be made for you to carpool with someone who does.

Breakfasts and dinner meals/barbecues are organized by teams. Lunches, snacks and beverages are each individual’s responsibility.

Cost:

Cost: The cost are TBD and will be confirmed prior to sign ups (target cost is  $412.00 and includes a 3% credit card fee). Family Policy:  Spouses and family members under the age of 26 years old are included in each member's annual membership, and can attend events at no cost, unless TVFF has supplemental costs (such as guide or facility fees) for the event.  In such cases, each attendee must pay the appropriate event cost listed above.

Fishmeister: Jim Knecht, jdknecht@pacbell.net

Accommodations and Food:

Roostercomb Ranch has a main-house with 4 bedrooms, please reserve the bedrooms for couples if applicable plus a bunkhouse with beds for 8. Bring your own bedding, sleeping bad, pillows, etc.

There are bathrooms with running water ... even hot water.  Bring your own towels and other toiletries.

Gear and Tackle Recommendations:

Bring your fishing license.

Bring a float tube and pump

Rod & line weights/types: 4, 5 or 6 weight rods, reels and floating lines

Leaders and tippet: Fishing style dependent, but normally I fish a 9’ 4X leader and adjust with added tippet of up to 4-6’ of 5 or 6X for the dry flies.  The Truckee is home to large browns so if you plan on throwing some streamer meat you'll want a 5 or 6 weight rod as the current flow can require a stouter rod.  Lake fishing will be dependent upon your style as well, but a 5 or 6 weight rod will normally suffice.

Other gear: Standard waders, boots, and normal fishing wear.

Flies: Flies to match hatches above and we will send out a more current list as we get closer to the dates and better understand how the weather and water are impacting the hatches.

Agenda:

Saturday Morning:

Meet at Casa de Fruta Restaurant on Hwy 152 (between Los Banos and Gilroy).  Arrive early if you want to have breakfast before leaving for the Roostercomb Ranch.  I suggest you eat before the ride in (either at home or Casa de Fruta).  We will leave Casa de Fruta  ~7:45, plan accordingly.  It’s about a 90 minute drive in to the ranch from there.

 At the ranch:

Once arriving at the ranch, find a bed.  There’s a main house that has 4 bedrooms, please reserve these for couples if applicable.  There’s also a bunk house with beds for 8 more.

Then, sign up for your “Day of Departure Chores”

IMPORTANT:  There will be a sign up sheet for “Day of Departure Chores” (clean up duties).  Please sign up for a chore, else you will be assigned one by the fishmeisters.  Everyone is responsible for helping in the last day clean up.  Beyond your assigned duty, everyone is required to help with anything that seems unfinished.  In addition, each meal team is responsible for cleaning up after their meal is complete!

Then, get rigged up, this is a good time to pump up your float tube.

 And lastly, Go Fishing!

We’ll have a short briefing at the main house after which time we’ll head out in caravan fashion and drop people off at the different ponds.  There are 8 ponds on the ranch, 1 more on a neighboring ranch which we will have access to, and 2 more just outside the ranch entrance actually in Henry Coe Park that are a half mile walk in from the ‘road’.  All ponds need to be driven to, the closest is only a short 5 minute drive, the furthest is more like an hr. drive from the ranch house.

TVFF Cancellation Policy:

To sign-up for a TVFF Event  that is currently open for registration and chargeable (as set by the Fishmeister), you must both register and pay online (cost includes 3% credit card fee.)  There may be multiple payments required before the trip is actually taken (usually in the case of expensive trips), but it is necessary that you do make payment in the above timely fashion for the initial amount to secure your position on the trip.  However, please note that you are still responsible for the entire amount of the trip if you should need to cancel.

Once you are registered, there are no refunds for chargeable Events and trips.  In the situation that a member is, for any reason unable to attend, they may resell their registration slot to another TVFF member (by first pulling from the waitlist if one exists).  New participants must come first from the waitlist in the order they signed up.  The member cancelling is fully and solely responsible for contacting potential members to replace them and notifying the appropriate Fishmeister.

If an event/trip is fully registered and closed to registration, you may still sign up on the Wait List to be notified if there are any cancellations.  In such a case of registering provisionally on the Wait List, you do not have to pay until such time that you clear the Wait List and are confirmed for participation.
