Event Description: Introduction to the Yuba River Skwala Hatch
This Club developed session is to prepare members for the current and upcoming Skwala hatches on the lower Yuba river in January through March. You must register separately for the class and the outing if you wish to attend either of them. The optional Skwala Hunt is scheduled for the next day, February 19th that you can register for separately here on the website: Skwala outing registration only and is not included in this class tuition.
The course material consists of Skwala hatch entomology, suggested flies, recommended rigging, local maps, and successful fishing techniques gained over the 8 years we've been fishing this unique hatch on the Yuba. We will make extensive use of captured Skwala nymphs and adults from the Tri-Valley entomology collection.
The Skwalas begin hatching in early January and are known as the first big bug hatch of the year and last until the end of March. They can occur, weather dependent, in large populations of both dry flies and hatching nymphs that attract large fish in the Yuba, including Steelhead.
Class Curriculum:
Session will focus on Skwala identification and metamorphosis/hatch progression. It will also include typical dry flies and nymphs to fish (with recommended vendors distributed before the class), leader and tippet rigging, Yuba river maps and recommended places to fish, as well as suggested techniques for successfully fishing the hatch with nymphs and dries.
There is a minimum class size of four for this class, with no maximum.
Registration and Costs:
Cash price: $25.75. You may pay by credit card online, or cash directly to the Club Treasurer within two weeks of registration. If you do pay cash you will be put into "Pending Registration" until your payment is received within the two weeks. Late payments will require you to register once again if there is space still available.
