President's Outing for New Members on the Yuba River

Skills Level:

Wading:  Easy to moderate

Catch Rate:  Challenging

Hiking:  Easy to Moderate as you are walking on cobblestones near the water

Registration: Is required.  Please register for this event for planning purposes.

We have created a special outing for our new members (only) in the last twelve (12) months to acquaint them with Tri Valley Fly Fishers and the always challenging Yuba River.  Rob Farris, the President, and TVFF Board of Director members and instructors will be on-site during the day to assist members with setting up to fish successfully, learn new skills, meet other members, and get comfortable on one of our premier local rivers in a low pressured environment.

Our Club event on the Yuba will be at Hammon Grove Park below the highway 20 bridge. The river has easy and level access, so it's ideal for those less comfortable in heavy current wading situations, although that is also available for those Euro Nymphing.  There are many different accessible areas on the river so it lends itself to indicator nymphing, Euro nymphing, streamers, dry fly fishing, and throwing streamers.  Our instructors will break into groups to assist those interested in fishing particular styles, and then provide extensive on the water coaching.

If you are new to fly fishing and haven't yet bought your rod, reel, boots, waders, and way too may flies, then don't worry.  TVFF has loaner rod setups and your instructors will have all the trimmings to help you out for the day.

Picnic tables and  a portable restroom are available at Hommon Grove and we will meet there for initial instruction and rod setups, and then adjourn directly down tot he river.  We will re-engage at the picnic tables for  lunch and a short break before resuming fishing in the afternoon.  Hammon Grove (see directions below) ia a 2 hour and 20 minute drive from the Pleasanton - Livermore area and it allows for a good single day outing and to be home aby early evening.

Cost:

Your cost this year includes our BBQ lunch and normal beverages such as water and soft drink. If you would like something else, please be sure to bring it along.

Cash price: $0 per TVFF member for the benefit of our new members (only).

Credit Card price: $0 per TVFF member for the benefit of our new members (only).

Guests must first register as Club members ($45 annual charge) before registering for this event.  TVFF annual dues qualify you and your qualifying family members (spouse and children under 23) for a full 12 month membership and access to all Club events and full participation.  After registering as a Club member, the above costs for the event will apply.

Fishmeister: Rob Farris, President, (925)286-5502

Accommodations and Food:

Due to its close location there shouldn't be a need for overnight accommodation's, unless you plan to stay over and fish another day.

Lodging is available nearby in both Grass Valley (19 miles away up highway 20) or in Nevada City (another three miles up from Grass Valley) for those looking for a hotel.

There is no camping on the UC Property, however camping is available on highway 20 three miles downstream at Sycamore Ranch, which has a full time host and over 40 sites for both tents and RVs, and is right on the Yuba river.

Each individual is responsible for their own food (aside from the TVFF Club lunch) and accommodations if they choose to stay in the area.

Gear and Tackle Recommendations:

Yuba River fish are notoriously "hot" and frisky. They workout full time in the strong current and just love to play in it when disturbed by a sharp hook. Anticipate that you will see strong runs on hookups and that the fish will feel like they are 4-6" larger than you see in the net. So...

Rod & line weights/types: 5 or 6 weight rods, reels and floating lines are the norm to help control their runs. A 4 weight for Euro Nymphing should work well as long as it has a good stiff butt section to manage any runs.

Leaders and tippet: Fishing style dependent but normally I fish a 9’ 4X leader and adjust with added tippet of up to 4-6’ of 5 for the dry flies, and stick with 4X fluoro for the nymphs.

Other gear: Note that we won't be using any watercraft as this is a walk and wade event with float takeouts way too far downstream to be of use for us.

Flies: Flies to match and we will send out a more current list as we get closer to the dates and better understand how the weather and water are impacting the hatches. Typically you will need Skwala and Golden Stonefly nymphs, Pale Morning Duns, Baetis/Blue Wing Olives,  and four varieties of Caddis,.

TVFF Cancellation Policy:

To sign-up for a TVFF Event  that is currently open for registration and chargeable (as set by the Fishmeister), you must both register and pay online, or via check or cash, within two weeks of registering (sent to the TVFF Treasurer) whatever fee is described for that particular Event (trip) at the time of registration. There may be multiple payments required before the trip is actually taken (usually in the case of expensive trips), but it is necessary that you do make payment in the above timely fashion for the initial amount to secure your position on the trip.  However, please note that you are still responsible for the entire amount of the trip if you should need to cancel.

Once you are registered, there are no refunds for chargeable Events and trips.  In the situation that a member is, for any reason unable to attend, they may resell their registration slot to another TVFF member (by first pulling from the waitlist if one exists).  New participants must come first from the waitlist in the order they signed up.  The member cancelling is fully and solely responsible for contacting potential members to replace them and notifying the appropriate Fishmeister.

If an event/trip is fully registered and closed to registration, you may still sign up on the Wait List to be notified if there are any cancellations.  In such a case of registering provisionally on the Wait List, you do not have to pay until such time that you clear the Wait List and are confirmed for participation.

Tri-Valley Fly Fishers

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Protocol

TVFF Outings Policy as of September 20, 2020

As a club, the Tri-Valley Fly Fishers have developed and agreed to a set of required guidelines, protocols and rules in order to help direct our members on ways to stay safe on one-day outings, multi-day outings, or individual “Tag-Alongs”.

These protocols were developed by the TVFF Board of Directors as well as input from other local clubs which included a member virologist, various safety committees, and member experts. We feel that these protocols and guidelines are consistent with public health information and experts. These protocols are assured, observed, and enforced by outing leaders as well as members themselves. Extra masks, spray disinfectant and sanitizer are available from the outing leaders.

Please note that the Tri-Valley Fly Fishers accepts no liability for inadequate protection or the transmission of Covid-19 among members or guests. Therefore, each member should review the following protocols that the Club subscribes to and make an individual decision of whether to participate in an activity or not, based upon their individual circumstances and personal safety.

TVFF Outings protocols are as follows:

  • If you are sick with cold/flu symptoms then we ask you to please stay home
