Practice and Skill Development for Yellowstone Conservation Trip Participants this Summer

Event Skill Levels:

  • Lakes: intermediate with float tubes to prams,  accessible shore fishing in heavy brush
  • Wading: intermediate in lake with some spongy sentiment over gravel
  • Hiking: beginner level and flat with maximum 2 mile hike around the lake
  • Catch success rate: intermediate to excellent

Image previewThis is a 2 night-3 day trip for this year's Yellowstone Conservation Project attendees to develop shore and boat fishing skills for the project at Yellowstone.

The trip is open to all club members of course, but the Yellowstone Project members will be focused on skills development specific to Grebe and Wolf Lakes in Yellowstone this year.  Therefore there will be little support or assistance for non YNPVFFP participants as the key focus is on trip preparation, although everyone is welcome.

We will be using and developing long and soft roll casts to feeding fish among the bushes as you can see above.  We'll also be using the usual lake flies with callibaetis dries and nymphs, as well as damsels, wooly buggers and leeches from the watercraft.

This is a combination wading and optional watercraft  trip and will require moving around frequently with some hikes of a maximum of about 2 miles in some areas. Individuals will be fishing specific challenging areas from shoreline throughout the evening on Day 1, fish from a watercraft ) or from shore on Day 2, and finish up with a full day fishing from shore on Day 3.

Cost:

Tag Along participants responsible for own campsites and transportation.

Cash price: $0

Credit Card price: $0.

Fishmeister: Rob Farris, RFFarris@comcast.net, (925)286-5502

Accommodations and Food:

Rob will be camping at Manzanita Lake campground in Lassen National Park and can share his campground with an additional two other tents at $15 cost per tent.  The first two to register can secure those spots.  Note that campsites for two successive nights are hard to find but single night spots are widely available and may require you to move for one of the nights.  Camping is also available in the area at several locations, including Manzanita Lake and several other park campgrounds as well as well as other sites outside the park north on highway 89 a few miles away.

Each individual is responsible for their own food and accommodations.

Gear and Tackle Recommendations:

Rod & line weights/types: 4, 5, or 6 weight rods, reels and floating lines for Manzanita Lake. shoreline fishing  On the lake you may want 5 and 6 weight rods with both floating and sinking lines as the fish as known to dive deep and hide in the weeds after being hooked.

Leaders and tippet:  The Lakes: usually a 8-10' 3X leader (for indictor styles) with 4X tippet should suffice, and a 4-6' 2 or 3X leader if you will be pulling streamers. Shore fishing setups should be 10-12' 4, 5 or 6X leaders and tippet.

Flies.  The lake allows for dry fly fishing in the early morning on the shorelines with callibaetis and damselflies.  The Lake is mostly either indicators or streamers during the day with leeches, midges, and the normal callibaetis patterns as dries or olive and tan nymphs.

TVFF Cancellation Policy:

To sign-up for a TVFF Event  that is currently open for registration and chargeable (as set by the Fishmeister), you must both register and pay online, or via check or cash, within two weeks of registering (sent to the TVFF Treasurer) whatever fee is described for that particular Event (trip) at the time of registration. There may be multiple payments required before the trip is actually taken (usually in the case of expensive trips), but it is necessary that you do make payment in the above timely fashion for the initial amount to secure your position on the trip.  However, please note that you are still responsible for the entire amount of the trip if you should need to cancel.

Once you are registered, there are no refunds for chargeable Events and trips.  In the situation that a member is, for any reason unable to attend, they may resell their registration slot to another TVFF member (by first pulling from the waitlist if one exists).  New participants must come first from the waitlist in the order they signed up.  The member cancelling is fully and solely responsible for contacting potential members to replace them and notifying the appropriate Fishmeister.

If an event/trip is fully registered and closed to registration, you may still sign up on the Wait List to be notified if there are any cancellations.  In such a case of registering provisionally on the Wait List, you do not have to pay until such time that you clear the Wait List and are confirmed for participation.
