Event Description: Introduction to the Yuba River Skwala Hatch

This Club developed session is to prepare members for the current and upcoming Skwala hatches on the lower Yuba river in January through March.  The course material consists of Skwala hatch entomology, suggested flies, recommended rigging, local maps, and successful fishing techniques, as well as local guide tips.

The Skwalas begin hatching in early January and are known as the first big bug hatch of the year and last until the end of March.  They can occur, weather dependent, in large populations of both dry flies and hatching nymphs that attract large fish in the Yuba, including Steelhead.  This year we are fortunate to have reserved the UC Property on the Yuba river in the prime season to fish the Skwala's in early March (separate registration for that event is required).

This session will be followed by a Club fly tying session on Wednesday evening (requires separate registration) TBD; to equip our fly tying members with the suggested patterns.

Class Curriculum:

Session will focus on Skwala identification and hatch progression.  It will also include typical dry flies and nymphs to fish (with recommended vendors), leader and tippet rigging, Yuba river maps and recommended places to fish, and suggested techniques for successfully fishing the hatch with nymphs and dries.
