Event Description:
Event Skill Levels:
- Stream: beginner to advanced (some optional euro pocket water)
- Lake: beginner with float tubes to prams, little accessible shore fishing at Milton
- Wading: intermediate level in riffles with slippery medium rocks, advanced in pocket water
- Hiking: beginner and flat with maximum 2 mile optional hikes
- Catch success rate: intermediate to advanced skills required
This is the annual TVFF Club 3 night-4 day camping trip headquartered at Logger Campground,
Stampede Reservoir with three days of fishing the Big Truckee, Little Truckee, and Milton Lake for rainbow and brown trout. It coincides with the peak of multiple aquatic hatches in the area (see the hatch chart; Truckee hatch chart ), and will include river wading opportunities and an optional day of float tube/pontoon/pram fishing at Milton Lake. Fishing techniques to be used include traditional indicator nymphing, Euro nymphing, streamers, and dry fly techniques. Day 1 is a travel day with late evening fishing.
Registration is expected to be large so the camping group will be split up to fish the various locations during each day as to not crowd each other. We will be fishing the Big Truckee at Glenshire, Boca, Hirschdale and downstream in the Farad area with access via a 2 mile riverside trail. We will also be splitting into smaller groups to fish the Little Truckee on the main river in three separate locations, as well as the Boca inlet and Cave Rock. I will be asking a few folks to be assistant Fishmeisters on the trip for each group, and we will be providing maps as well. The third group each day will be at Milton Lake 20 miles west of highway 89 near Jackson Meadows. And then we'll play musical chairs and shift the groups to new locations each day with full reports that evening over beer and scotch around the campfire.
Hatches during this period are profuse and varied. We will see Golden Stones, PMD's, Pinkies, some Caddis, and usually a good large Green Drake hatch. You may want to stop in Mountain Hardware in Truckee (an excellent selection of local guide tied flies) to check on their excellent reports and superb fly selection, as well as anything else you may need for the week. In addition there is a new fly shop in Truckee, but I have not been able to verify their offerings or helpfulness.
Cost:
Cash price: You may pay by check or cash directly to the Club Treasurer within two weeks of registration and not pay the credit card surcharge of 3.0% if you desire. If you do pay cash you will be put into "Pending Registration" until your payment is received within the two weeks. Late payments will require you to register once again if there is space still available. The cost for this trip is $40 for TVFF members and $85 (includes the $45 annual membership to TVFF) for non-members and guests.
Credit Card price: Price of $41.20 includes the payment by credit card with the 3.0% surcharge. Guest cost is $86.20 for non-members and guests that includes an annual membership to TVFF.

Accommodations and Food:
Campsite Reservations: You should make your reservations now. We have reserved a campsite #110 in Logger Campground as our general staging and dinner area. Once the campground registration opens up I will update this as to our location so that you can pick a nearby site. The Club's campsite usually can accommodate 4 tents and 2 non RV vehicles (extra vehicles cost +$5/day). We are offering those reserved sites to the first 4 TVFF anglers (Rob, Denis, Lori, and Mitchie) that have signed up that are not bringing up their RV/motor homes (site cannot accommodate RV's), and cost for the site will be apportioned between those using it.
For those not on the list above or bringing an RV/Motorhome, you may want to secure a campsite at Logger Campground. Our site is located in the loop close to the kiosk check-in station and restrooms. Campsites are $23/night for singles and $49/night for doubles.
This campground on Stampede Reservoir (just above the Little Truckee) is quite popular and fills up quickly, so you should make your reservations as soon as possible to secure a site. The reservation site is listed below, as are the maps availability links.

Each individual is responsible for their own food, however we are planning for a group potluck the first evening and will be share current conditions, gear, flies, etc. Requested menu offerings will be distributed later.
Gear and Tackle Recommendations:
Rod & line weights/types: 4, 5 or 6 weight rods, reels and floating lines
Leaders and tippet: Fishing style dependent, but normally I fish a 9’ 4X leader and adjust with added tippet of up to 4-6’ of 5 or 6X for the dry flies. The Truckee is home to large browns so if you plan on throwing some streamer meat you'll want a 5 or 6 weight rod as the current flow can require a stouter rod. Lake fishing will be dependent upon your style as well, but a 5 or 6 weight rod will normally suffice.
Other gear: Standard waders, boots, wading staff (for the Truckee), watercraft are allowed on Milton only with no motors, and normal fishing wear.
Flies: Flies to match hatches above and we will send out a more current list as we get closer to the dates and better understand how the weather and water are impacting the hatches.
TVFF Cancellation Policy:
To sign-up for a TVFF Event that is currently open for registration and chargeable (as set by the Fishmeister), you must both register and pay online, or via check or cash, within two weeks of registering (sent to the TVFF Treasurer) whatever fee is described for that particular Event (trip) at the time of registration. There may be multiple payments required before the trip is actually taken (usually in the case of expensive trips), but it is necessary that you do make payment in the above timely fashion for the initial amount to secure your position on the trip. However, please note that you are still responsible for the entire amount of the trip if you should need to cancel.
Once you are registered, there are no refunds for chargeable Events and trips. In the situation that a member is, for any reason unable to attend, they may resell their registration slot to another TVFF member (by first pulling from the waitlist if one exists). New participants must come first from the waitlist in the order they signed up. The member cancelling is fully and solely responsible for contacting potential members to replace them and notifying the appropriate Fishmeister.
If an event/trip is fully registered and closed to registration, you may still sign up on the Wait List to be notified if there are any cancellations. In such a case of registering provisionally on the Wait List, you do not have to pay until such time that you clear the Wait List and are confirmed for participation.

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Protocol
TVFF Outings Policy as of September 20, 2020
As a club, the Tri Valley Fly Fishers have developed and agreed to a set of required guidelines, protocols and rules in order to help direct our members on ways to stay safe day, multi-day outings, or individual “Tag-Alongs”.
These protocols were developed by the TVFF Board of Directors as well as input from other local clubs which included a member virologist, various safety committees, and member experts. We feel that these protocols and guidelines are consistent with public health information and experts. These protocols are assured, observed, and enforced by outing leaders as well as members themselves. Extra masks, spray disinfectant and sanitizer are available from the outing leaders.
Please note that the Tri Valley Fly Fishers accepts no liability for inadequate protection or the transmission of Covid-19 among members or guests. Therefore, each member should review the following protocols that the Club subscribes to and make an individual decision of whether to participate in an activity or not, based upon their individual circumstances and personal safety.
TVFF Outings protocols are as follows:
- If you are sick with cold/flu symptoms then we ask you to please stay home
- All attendees should drive up and back alone unless you are in mutually agreed social bubble where both parties have been tested negative and agreed to the risk (such as family members)
- On all outings the Club will have available and use an Infrared Thermometer temperature checks
- We believe in social distancing and require that all members keep a full fly rod distance of at least 6’ distance between parties
- We ask that all parties wear masks if within 6’; even if only briefly. Note that the CDC has not recommended the use of buffs or gaiters as the material is not thick enough for adequate protection.
- Everyone will be responsible for making, bringing, and consuming their own separate food and drinks
- When camping all members and guests are required to use separate camping tents or rooms, when hotels are arranged
- Please handle your own gear (and your own fish!) only. No sharing for doctored fish pictures.
- In the event that there are common surfaces (i.e. car surfaces, door handles, etc.) please wipe them down with sanitizer or hand wipes
- All attendees should wash and sanitize their hands frequently
