Event Description:  Now scheduled and confirmed for August 3, 2019

This single day Saturday learning opportunity is a TVFF Club event and will be taught by Alan Wyosnick, an experienced and confirmed Euro/High Stick nymphing member of the Club.  This class is designed for intermediate or advanced fly fishers with existing experience with standard nymphing techniques and proficient casting skills that wish to learn the Euro Nymphing techniques to take their game to the next level.

The trip is tentatively scheduled for the North Fork of the Stanislaus above Arnold and Calaveras Big Trees Park and will meet at the Sourgrass Bridge day use parking lot accessed from Dorrington.

While not primarily focused on actually catching fish this particular day, we are hopeful that in the course of the training we may find a few willing examples. Thus, the session may not be appropriate for those simply looking to get out for a day of fishing. Maximum class size is limited to the first six registrants and guests.

The full day session primarily focuses intently on learning the skills to be successful with European style nymphing techniques such as:

The Morning Session will be structured around the theory and advantages of this style:

  • Euro nymphing equipment (rods, reels, leaders, etc.)
  • How it differs from standard and indicator nymphing techniques
  • Critical items of importance for success
  • Setting up a Euro nymphing rig and the differences to others
  • Types and use of indicators (i.e. inline, multi color, etc.)
  • Fly selection and Euro speciality flies
  • How to get your flies down quickly in the hunting zone
  • Proper weight management to achieve the right presentation

The Afternoon Session will be practical on the water experience and putting the morning's session to work in a live environment.  This session will cover:

  • Wading and approach differences
  • Selecting key waters for Euro nymphing success
  • How to cast a Euro nymphing rig
  • Presentation and proper drift
  • How to detect the "take"
  • Proper hooksets for fish
  • When to lead and when to follow your flies
  • 15 min for each angler to try the technique with everyone together

  • We will then spread out a little on the river and Alan will provide 30 min 1 on 1 with each angler until the end of the day

A minimal cost of $25 per student will be assessed.  Guests that are not currently TVFF club members can participate with paying the class fee plus a $45 TVFF Club membership fee.  Guests however must be approved by the Fishmeister and existing Club members will have priority for open enrollment.
